Oilers Young Guns Exorcise Detroit Demons in 3-1 Win

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns finally defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 for the first time in regulation in six years, and the first time at home in nine years. This also gave them a three game winning streak.

In the first period at 12:32 on a power play Justin Schultz passed the puck up to Nail Yakupov on the right hand side. Yakapov brought the puck in over the blue line and skated backwards into the right hand corner. He spotted Mark Letestu in the slot as three Red Wings converged on him. He snapped a pass and Letestu shot the puck off the heal of his stick, bounced off  his skate and into the Detroit goal to make it 1-0.

In the second period at 6:34 Nail Yakupov received the puck in his own zone along the right wall and bounced the puck off the boards as the Oilers broke out of their zone. Benoit Pouliot picked up the puck in the neutral zone and brought it in the Red Wing zone. While in the neutral zone Connor McDavid held off a check from Brad Richards in order not to go off side. McDavid then sprang forward into the Red Wing zone with no one in front of him and received a pass from Pouliot. McDavid then faked to the right, sending the goalie in that direction and brought the puck back to his left and shot the puck in for his first NHL goal at home and gave the Oil a 2-0 lead.

Later in the second period at 7:04 Mark Fayne bounced the puck off the boards to clear the Oilers zone. Lauri Korpikoski then brought the puck up through the neutral zone creating a two on one. After gaining the zone he passed the puck off to Teddy Purcell who was in all alone, he snapped the shot off the Detroit goal tender and the rebound bounced out and deflected off a pursuing Red Wing defender into the goal, padding the Oilers lead 3-0.

The Wings scored in the third period cutting the lead 3-1. But another stellar performance by Oilers goal tender Cam Talbot kept the door shut for the rest of the game to preserve the victory.
