Oilers Young Guns shoot blanks against the Leafs

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns shot blanks against the Toronto Maple Leafs as they out shot them 43-26 but lost 4-0. Phil Kessel scored 2 goals and 2 assists as he seemed to put the puck in from every angle. RNH logged 20 minutes and 2 shots and was the best Oiler forward out there but was unable to convert. Nail Yakupov tried mightily with 21 minutes on the ice and 2 shots but finished with -4.

The game seemed to turn when Justin Shultz broke in from the blue line to take a pass and was open for the shot and missed wide. The Leafs countered with a break away as Kessel centered a pass that was tipped in early in the second period.

The Oil have a few days off to lick their wounds and face Detroit Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada.

 

Oilers Young Guns Salvaged by Bachman

The Oilers Young Guns salvaged a point on the strength of called up goalie Robert Bachman. The netminder stopped 47 of 48 shots to take the L.A. Kings into a 1-1 overtime game. The Kings pressed all game but Bachman held his ground. Nail Yakupov scored his first goal of the season on a rebound that he put past Quick on a hard wrist shot.

In overtime Jordan Eberly scored the first goal on the shootout. L.A. countered with 2 goals. RNH was the final shooter to tie up the game but shot wide and the Oilers went down 2-1. The Oil next take on two original six teams with Toronto on Tuesday and Detroit on Saturday both in Edmonton.

Oilers Young Guns have a bite taken out by the Coyotes

The Oilers Young Guns had a bite taken out of them by the Phoenix Coyotes. The Oil were taken down 5-4. They opened the scoring but the Coyotes then scored 3 in a row. The Young Oil showed some resilience as they responded with 3 straight goals themselves. But they were unable to hold on as Phoenix tied up the game and went on to win.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added 2 assists while Nail Yakupov got an assist as well. Justin Schultz tallied his sixth assist of the season. The Young Guns are back in action tonight against the Los Angeles Kings.

Oilers Young Guns Hit Caps Wall

The Oilers Young Guns were unable to put the puck past Washington Capitals goaltender Holtby for most of the game. The Oil put pressure on early in the game but hit the Holtby wall. Alex Ovechkin put the Caps on the board late in the first period when he snapped a shot to the top corner after a faceoff in the Oilers zone. They went on to score 4 straight goals.

Oilers Young Gun Justin Schultz finally scored for the Oilers late in the third period when he broke loose on the right side and slipped the puck through the goaltender to record his first goal of the season. The Edmonton Oilers now go on a two game road trip on the weekend as they face the Coyotes and the Kings.

Oilers Young Guns Storm Back to Defeat the Montreal Canadiens

The Edmonton Oiler Young Guns stormed back in the second half of the game to hand the Habs a 4-3 defeat. After going down 2 goals in the first period the Oilers Young Guns scored 4 straight goals. Montreal added a late tally in the dying seconds.

On the second goal Ryan Nugent-Hopkins blasted a shot down the middle, a huge rebound off goalie Price was gobbled up by Smid on an angle who wristed the puck home. On the go ahead goal RNH and Jordan Eberly both got their second assists of the game on a goal from Petry. While Jones scored the game winning goal.

Nail Yakupov played a more solid game while blue liner Justin Schultz logged 23 minutes of ice time. The Oil finished with a 2-3-1 record on this six game road trip and are sporting a 2 game winning streak.

Oilers Young Guns Post Win Against Sens

The Edmonton Oiler Young Guns won their first game in regulation this season defeating the Ottawa Senators 3-1. Jordan Eberly opened the scoring early in the first on a two on one breakaway. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins bumped the puck up to Eberly who used Nail Yakupov as a decoy for a potential pass on the open wing. Then Eberly elected to dangle the puck and score on the short side.

In the middle of the first period the Oilers Young Guns were at it again as Nail Yakupov blasted a shot from the slot, RNH got to the rebound at a sharp angle and put it home for their second Goal. It was Yakupov’s first point of the season and Eberly added an assist on the play.

Later in the game Taylor Hall was sidelined after a collision to injure his knee and is back in Edmonton for evaluation.

Ottawa made it close with a goal midway through the third, but solid goal tending kept them out. Then late in the third Ryan Nugent-Hopkins found himself in the clear and scored an empty netter to seal the deal. Next up Montreal.

Oilers Young Guns Unable to Escape from New York

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were unable to escape from the New York Islanders as they dropped another one goal game 3-2. John Tavares put away the Oil with a top corner goal late in the second period to hand the Oilers their fifth straight loss.

Taylor Hall broke another Wayne Gretzky record by scoring two goals in 8 seconds beating the Great Ones feat of 2 goals in 9 seconds. Justin Schultz and Jordan Eberly added assists to the tallies while Arcobello continued his point streak by contributing on both goals for 8 assists in 8 games.

In this young season the Edmonton Oilers already face the daunting task of defeating two Canadian teams to keep their playoff hopes alive on this six game road trip. They face the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens in what may prove to be their water shed moment.

Oilers Young Guns Solid in Loss to Penguins

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were edged out 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in a solid effort. Soft goals plagued the Oil once again but they responded to adversity tying the score twice before succumbing to a power play goal by Evgeni Malkin. Sidney Crosby added 3 assists to give the Pens four straight wins at home to begin the season.

The Oilers started slow but put it into high gear in the second period out shooting the Pens. On the Oilers second goal Hall crashed through the middle setting up a flurry of shots before Jordan Eberly was able to get a rebound and lift a backhand over the sprawling goalie and several players.

The Edmonton Oilers move on to play the New York Islanders on Thursday.

Oilers Young Guns Run and Gun with the Leafs

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns lost 6-5 in OT to the Toronto Maple leafs. In a highly entertaining and torrid affair the teams traded goals into overtime. Smyth started the scoring by deflecting a pass top shelf from Mark Arcobello, who notched three assists for the game. Toronto responded with 2 goals. Late in the first period Ryan Nugent-Hopkins tied the game with a wrist shot on a five on three power play with an assist from Justin Schultz.

In the second period the teams traded goals to stay knotted at 3. In the third period Jordan Eberle scored his first goal of the season on a two on one breakaway assisted by Arcobello and Taylor Hall, for his second assist of the game. But once again Toronto tied the score. With eight and a half minutes left Eberly threaded a nice pass to Smyth who deflected the puck home. But with only 31 seconds left in the game Toronto tied it at five.

In overtime RNH controlled the puck but was punched in the back of the head by a Leafs player to jar the puck loose. There was no penalty called on the play and Toronto had a 3 on 1 breakaway. The Leafs passes the puck back and forth before shooting and Bolland scored on the rebound to win the game. Meanwhile, Oilers GM Craig MacTavish scowled as he observed from high in the press box.
