Oilers Young Guns Wrangeled by Rangers

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were defeated by the New York Rangers 5-0.

In the meantime, before the game the Oilers organization honored aboriginal survivors from the residential schools who overcame their struggles with the help of playing hockey. Frank Sasakamoose was on hand to ceremonial drop the puck. Sasakamoose was the first aboriginal to play in the NHL. He was called up late in the 1953-54 season by the Chicago Black Hawks to play against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night in Canada. He was playing Junior for the Moose Jaw Canucks and was MVP for Western Canada when called up. He played 11 games. The next season his wife challenged him to choose her or hockey. At the time he decided to choose her and they ended up having 10 children and 40 grand children. When asked if he had a chance to do it again would he have chosen Hockey? He answered that he had made the right choice.

Oilers Young Guns Shoot Ducks Down

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns shot down the Anaheim Ducks to win 4-3 in overtime. The Ducks opened the scoring 35 seconds into the game to go up 1-0. The Oil countered at 4:43 when Taylor Hall gathered a pass on the left boards in the Oilers zone. He spotted David Perron breaking out of the zone and passed it to him just over the blue line. Perron took the puck down center ice on a two on one and gained the zone. He passed the puck over to Sam Gagner breaking on the right. Gagner drove for the net, stick handled the puck and backhanded a shot through the goalie to tie the game 1-1. It was Gagner’s 100th NHL goal of his career.

In the second period Ben Scrivens kept the Oilers in the game as he made several brilliant and a couple of lucky saves fending off a Ducks attack. At 10:22 Martin Marincin cleared the zone and made a long pass off the left hand boards. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins picked up the puck and continued down the left hand side. Taylor Hall was driving down the middle but was upended by a Ducks player to draw a penalty. The play continued as RNH gained the zone, he threaded a pass from the left circle to an open Jordan Ebely on the right hand side. Eberly received the puck and snapped a shot passed the blocker side of Hiller to make it 2-1 and take the lead for the first time in the game. Five minutes later the Ducks were not to be denied as they scored to make it 2-2.

In the third period at 8:26 Justin Schultz controlled the puck behind his net. He passed the puck up to Perron near the center line. Perron brought the puck into the Anaheim zone on the left hand side. He held on to the puck as the Oilers forwards moved to the net. Defenceman Oscar Klefbom trailed behind and Perron passed him the puck. Klefbom moved into the slot with Gagner setting a screen in front of the goalie. Klefbom then snapped a shot on the right hand side to score his first NHL goal and give the Oilers Young Guns a 3-2 lead. Late in the third the Ducks mounted several attacks and finally scored to tie the game 3-3 and take the game into overtime.

In overtime the Ducks drew two penalties and had several opportunities to win the game but Scrivens continued to turn them aside. The Oilers then drew a penalty to go three on three for a short time. At 3:51 the Ducks attempted to move the puck up and a long pass was made through the center ice circle. Captain Andrew Ference then came roaring off the bench and intercepted the puck. He drove into the Duck’s zone with Perron and Gagner on the wings. Ference pulled up and blasted a slap shot that rang off the right hand post and in to give the Oil a 4-3 overtime victory. Then Oilers players cleared the bench and swarmed Ference in celebration. Goalie Ben Scrivens earned the first star making 48 saves on 51 shots.

Oilers Young Guns Sink to Sharks

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns lost 5-2 to the San Jose Sharks as they attempted to rebound from a disastrous loss over the weekend. In the first period they played well enough with the Sharks to go up by a goal. At 4:11 Taylor Hall brought the puck up the left side into the Sharks zone and cut to the middle. He dropped a pass off to David Perron criss-crossing behind him who picked it up and drove to left of the net. Perron then drove wide and came back in and snapped a shot over the Sharks Goalie to make it 1-0.

In the second period the Oil played even until they took two penalties and were unable to fend off the Sharks as they scored two power play goals. The Sharks added another late in the period to go up 3-1. San Jose then added two more goals in the third to make it 5-1.

In the meantime, Nail Yakupov remained out of the line up due to a fractured ankle when he took a shot off the skate against the Wild back in February.

Oilers Young Guns Torched by Flames

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were torched by the Calgary Flames 8-1. The first period was played even with the game in the balance. At 4:34 the Oil were on a power play. Petry at the blue line passed over to Eberly on the left hand side. Eberly passed it back to Petry who dished it off to Nugent-Hopkins on the right hand side. RNH fed it toward the front but it bounced off a Flames player. Petry moved in on the loose puck and fired a shot. Jones without a stick was in front of the net and provided a screen. The puck went in through the five hole of the Flames goalie to make it a 1-0 game. Later in the first the Flames scored to make it 1-1.

In the second period the wheels fell off for the Oilers as Calgary scored 4 goals in a span 3:05 chasing Fasth from the net and making it 5-1. But it didnt stop there as the Flames scored 3 more in the third to complete the drubbing. Only an accidental water spray on coach Eakins by Taylor Hall cooled the heat. And once again an Oiler’s Jersey was tossed on the ice. This time more than one. But goalie Ben Scrivens picked one up with the blade of his stick and tossed it back into the stands, not accepting the offering, knowing that in good times or bad his team is a unit.

At 14:48 Taylor Hall gained the zone and moved the puck on the right side, he dropped a pass off to Sam Gagner, Gagner then snapped a shot to ricochet around several players. The puck lay in front off the goal as Taylor Hall came around the net and chipped it into the far right hand corner of the net and he raised his arms to celebrate. But the referee called it off and play continued for another minute and 17 seconds before the play was called. After review the goal stood to make it 3-0 but not until Fraser was assessed a penalty for holding during that time. Late in the second period Nashville countered to make it 3-1 and denied Oiler’s Goalie Viktor Fasth of a shot out bid.

In the third period at 8:38 the Oilers were on their fourth power play of the game. Just as it ended the Oilers were passing the puck around the zone. Eberly passed from the left hand side to RNH. The Nuge kept it in play as it bounced to the middle. Lander picked up the loose puck and passed it to Eberly on the left. Jordan Eberly then moved away from the net trying to control the puck, when he did he fired a back hand shot that hit the shoulder of Pred’s Goalie Rinne and it bounced into the net to make it 4-1. A short time later at 10:01 Nugent-Hopkins cleared the puck into the Predators zone. Eberly outraced everyone and gathered the puck on the left hand side. Without breaking stride he went straight to the net and shot a backhand in close. The Puck went through the goalie as he knelt down to make it 5-1 and complete the rout.

Shultz kept the puck for a few seconds as he moved in looking for a play. Smyth and Hall moved to the front of the net providing screens. Schultz spotted an opening and fired a wrist shot to the net. The puck sailed cleanly through and hit the net on the far left hand side. This made the score 2-1 and it was the first power play goal by the Oilers defensive core of the season.
