Oilers Young Guns Shut Out Canadiens With Fourth Straight Win

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns shut out the Montreal Canadians 3-0. The Oil posted their fourth straight win and are now .500 with a record of 4-4-1. To start the game the crowd was electric with the Oilers faithful cheering on their team and almost half of the crowd dressed in montreal canadiens bleu blanc rouge equally cheering their team on.

In the first period Montreal took two quick penalties but the Oilers power play was unable to capitalize. Edmonton then took a penalty but held off the Canadiens. With the period winding down at 19:41 the Canadiens had the puck in the Oilers zone when one of the Habs players back handed a pass to the defenseman Andrei Markov. Markov fell down trying to reach for the puck and the puck slid toward the Montreal blue line. Immediately Mark Arcobello gave chase and out skated the other Habs defenseman to gather the puck. Arcobello picked up the puck and brought it over the blue line. He spotted Benoit Pouliot breaking free down the middle and quickly made a pass by the lone Canadien defender. Pouliot was in all alone and made a small fake to the left then took it to his back hand and fired the puck high past the outstretched glove of the goalie for his first goal as an Oiler and to make it 1-0.

The Oilers Young Guns started the second period on a power play. The top line was buzzing in the Habs zone when Hall made a pass to Nugent-Hopkins who rang a shot off the post. At 6:33 Nail Yakupov picked up a long rebound and passed it over to Pouliot who led a charge into the Canadiens zone. Poliot passed the puck to Arcobello but the puck was knocked loose in the slot. Oilers defenseman Mark Fayne followed up the play and picked up the puck. He snapped a shot that deflected off the skate of a Habs defenceman, bounced off the end boards and back to the front side of the net. Pouliot picked up the rebound on the left side and passed it through the crease where Nail Yakupov was waiting. Yakupov slammed the puck into the gaping net to give the Oilers a commanding 2-0 lead.

In the third period Montreal put a lot of pressure on the Oil to get back in the game. But the Oilers kept their discipline and fought off their charge. At 17:42 the Habs pulled their goalie early. The oilers were hemmed in their zone with the puck in the right corner. Jesse Joensuu knocked the puck loose and moved it up the boards to Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Nugent-Hopkins deftly moved the puck out of the zone passing it off the boards ahead to Taylor Hall speeding up the left hand boards. Hall outraced a Montreal defender behind him to the empty net and calmly deposited the puck into the net to secure the lead 3-0. With time running out the crowd cheered their Oilers victory as goalie Ben Scrivens received the first star of the game for his shut out.

Oilers Young Guns Win Third Straight Breaking Canes

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns defeated the Carolina Hurricanes to win their third consecutive game in a row. Although the Oil started slowly and cautiously in the first period as Carolina peppered the Oilers goalie with several shots an early shot ringing off the post. The Oilers managed to get out of the period in a scoreless draw.

In the second period the pace finally picked up half way through. At 9:44 the Oilers  Young Guns line of Hall, Eberly and Nugent-Hopkins were up on a neutral zone fore check. The Carolina defenseman had the puck behind his net and skated up the middle of the ice looking for a teammate to make a pass. He passed toward the middle of the ice near the blue line when Taylor Hall lowered his stick to intercept. The puck bounced off Hall’s stick knocking the sick out of his hand momentarily, he quickly picked up his stick and circled back when Jordan Eberly picked up the loose puck and brought it over the blue line. Eberly quickly made a pass to Hall on his left hand side and drove for the net. Hall brought the puck down on the left and feathered a saucer pass back to Eberly. Eberly on the right of the net quickly deflected the puck into the net past the out stretched glove of the Carolina goalie to score his first goal of the season and make it 1-0. About five minutes later a desperate Hurricanes team put on the pressure and scored to tie the game at 1-1.

At 16:46 the Wagon line of Gordon, Hendricks and Joensuu were rolling in. Boyd Gordon jarred the puck loose in the defensive zone while Nikita Nikitin picked it up and passed it to Jesse Joensuu who brought the puck all the way up and gained the blue line. He made a drop pass to a trailing Nikitin who wristed a shot at the net. The Canes goalie caught the puck in mid air but then dropped it to his feet. Joensuu was on the doorstep and slapped the loose puck into the net to restore a one goal lead 2-1. But before the period ended Skinner of the Hurricanes let a shot sail high from the slot and picked off the corner to make it 2-2.

In the third period at 4:26 the Oil were on a power play. Taylor Hall had the puck and drove to the net on the left hand side and shot the puck to the short side. The puck was at the side of the net as a Carolina defender picked up the puck and attempted to shoot it away. Just then Benoit Pouliot came around the net and slashed the hand of the defender breaking his stick in the process and sending the defender sprawling to the ice. The puck squirted to the left corner where Jordan Eberly picked it up. With no penalty call being made Eberly stick handled the puck to the net and sniped the bottom right hand corner of the net to get his second goal of the game and make it 3-2. But the pesky Canes would not go away when the Oiler net minder Scrivens and his defense miscommunicated on a play that allowed the Canes to retrieve the puck and blast it from the point to tie up the score for the third time 3-3.

Then at 12:55 Jeff Petry kept the puck in the Canes zone stopping the puck at the blue line on the right hand side and shooting it all the way around the boards. David Perron awaited the puck at the left center boards and brought the puck into the middle, he spotted Oilers new Young Gun Leon Draisaitl at the right hand side of the net and dished it off to him. Draisaitl snapped a quick shot into the goalies pads as the puck rebounded to his left. Draisaitl retrieved the rebound and stretching out lifted a backhander into the net for his first career NHL goal to make it a 4-3 game.

At 15:50 Taylor Hall out raced a Canes defenseman to retrieve the puck in the right corner of the Hurricanes zone. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins came in to support him and passed the loose puck back up the right hand boards. Jordan Eberly picked it up at the half boards faked going to the net and passed it back to the blue line to Justin Schultz. Shultz blasted a shot from the right point into a maze of players in front of the net. The puck lay in front where Ryan Nugent-Hopkins found it and snapped it through a defenseman’s legs while the goalie was out of position to provide a two goal cushion and make it 5-3.

At 18:33 once again the Wagon line applied pressure as the Canes pulled their goalie. Matt Hendricks intercepted the puck on the left hand side and fired a shot just before the blue line to score a well deserved empty netter and give the Oilers Young Guns at 6-3 victory and a third straight win.

Half way through the first period Washington struck back to tie the game 1-1.

In the second period the Capitals scored top shelf five minutes in to give them their first lead of the game 2-1. But immediately on the next play at 5:10 the Oilers were trying to clear their zone when Alex Ovechkin intercepted the puck at the blue line and attempted a slap shot. Ovechkin fanned on the shot and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was there to swipe the puck away. Nugent-Hopkins sped down the right hand side on a breakaway. He had Jordan Eberle on his left driving down the middle. But Nugent-Hopkins elected to snap a wrist shot to the far left hand side and the puck zipped over the pad of goalie Braden Holtby to even the score 2-2.

In the last half of the second period Taylor Hall drew a slashing penalty and the Oilers went to work.
