Oilers Young Guns Lose to Wild After Olympic Break

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns lost to the Minnesota Wild 3-0 after returning from the Olympic break. Despite physical play from Hendricks and Gazdik the Oil were unable to get going. The play was sloppy for both sides as they tried to regain mid-season game form. The Wild scored in each of the three periods as the Oilers could not score on their 4 power plays.

Nail Yakupov stood out with some solid play as he kept himself and the puck moving in several plays. In the third period he suffered a slap shot off his foot from Justin Shultz as he provided a screen in front of the goalie and did not return for the rest of the game.

Oilers Young Guns Bedeviled in Jersey

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns lost to the New Jersey Devils 2-1 in Overtime. Both sides played defensively and kept it close. The Devils scored the first goal half way through the first period but 29 seconds later at 11:30 the Oil countered. Taylor Hall picked up a loose puck in the Oilers zone and started up ice. At center he passed to Nail Yakupov breaking down the right side. Yakupov gained the zone and forced the Devils goalie to play him. Hall then sped down the left side and Yakupov fed him a pass. Hall then wristed the puck in a wide open net to tie the game 1-1 for his twentieth goal of the season.

In the next two periods both teams slugged it out to get the upper hand but the game drew into overtime. The Oilers hoped to get into a shootout but it was not to be as the Devils gained the puck and got an open shot to win the game in OT.

The Oilers Young Guns now have a chance to regroup as they rest up for the next three weeks going into the Olympic break.

Oilers Young Guns Take a Bite out of the Big Apple

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns took a bite out of the Big Apple edging out the New York Rangers 2-1. The Oil have now won five out of the last six games and are two and one on this four game road trip. At 2:56 of the first period the Rangers tried to clear the puck from their zone. It missed a Rangers player and Perron intercepted. He shot and it deflected high towards the net. The puck landed in front of the goal as Perron and Smyth crashed the net. Smyth then tapped in the puck to give the Oilers an early 1-0 lead.

In the second period the Blue Shirts scored early to tie the game at one. The Oilers goalie Scrivens then made several spectacular saves in the period to keep the score knotted at 1-1.

In the third period the teams played even taking turns on chances to take the lead. Then with time running out at 18:22 Gagner retrieved the puck in the left corner of the Rangers zone and passed it behind the net. Taylor Hall was there to gather the puck. With a Ranger all over him Hall moved the puck back and forth along the boards three times to maintain possession. He then passed it back to Gagner in the left Corner. Gagner spotted Nail Yakupov moving into the slot and made a pass to him. Yakupov one timed a slapshot and it deflected off a Ranger and smashed into the net to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead. The Rangers pulled their Goalie and pressed to tie the game. But the Oil held on to take victory from Madison Square Gardens.

Oilers Young Guns Rattle the Sabers

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns rattled the Buffalo Sabers 3-2 to post their fourth win in five games. It was a battle of the bottom two teams in the league but an important stepping stone for both.

The Oil starting things off early at :32 seconds of the first period when Perron gained the zone on the right hand side and dropped a pass to Yakupov. Yakupov tipped the puck to center as Jeff Petry swooped in and shot a backhand shot and scored to make it 1-0 to the delight of several Oiler fans in the Buffalo arena. But Buffalo battled back and scored mid way through the first period. Then at the end of the period while killing a power play the Sabers took a breakout to the Oilers zone and scored a short handed goal. A league high 10th goal that the Oilers have given up on short handed goals this season.

But not to be denied in the second period at 16:45 on a 4 on 4 Justin Schultz retrieved the puck and passed it up to Perron on the left hand side. Perron brought the puck into the Buffalo zone and veered into the center high slot. He spotted Schultz breaking in on the right hand side and fed a pass to him. Schultz drove for the net and let a zinging wrist shot fly. The puck rung off the far left hand post and in to tie the game at 2-2.

To start the third period the Oilers were killing off a power play. At :57 seconds in Marincin corralled the puck behind the Oilers net and moved it up the left hand boards. Perron picked up the puck after it bounced off a linesman and passed it to Matt Hendricks breaking down through center ice. A Buffalo player tried to chip it out but it bounced off his stick. Hendricks picked up the puck in the Buffalo zone on a clear path to the goal. He stick handled it from the right hand side and beat the goalie on the left to make it 3-2. Once again the Oilers faithful in Buffalo roared a cheer as the Oilers scored their first short handed goal of the season.

The Oilers Ilya Bryzgalov then shut down the door for the rest of the third period to preserve the lead as he stopped 42 shots on the night.

Oilers Young Guns Undone by the Bruins.

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were knocked off by the Boston Bruins 4-0. Ben Scrivens was unable to continue his shutout bid as the Oilers defence was not up to the task. In the first period the Oilers kept it close with a strong defensive road game as the period ended in a scoreless tie.

Early in the second period the Bruins put on the pressure and scored on a power play. Later in the second another Boston goal was disallowed as the puck was kicked in and the period ended 1-0.

But in the third period the constant Bruins pressure finally broke down the door as they scored three straight goals to make it 4-0. The Oilers were unable to respond and lost their twelfth straight game to Boston.
