Oilers Young Guns Whipped by Washington

The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns were whipped 7-4 by the Washington Capitals to put their record to 3-5. The defense broke down immediately when the Caps scored their first goal early in the first period. At 10:59 the Oilers responded when Conner McDavid broke into the Caps zone on the right side and made a saucer pass to Nail Yakupov who was unable to score at the side of the net. But Yak retrieved the puck and passed in the slot to Bonoit Pouliot who snapped a shot high over the Caps goaltender to tie the score 1-1.

A few minutes later the Oiler defense broke down when the Caps sliced in to score their second goal. The Oilers once again responded at 15:00 when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins brought the puck into the Caps zone and passed it off the Taylor Hall. Hall cut through the middle and fired a shot that was blocked. He picked up the loose puck and fired it at the net. Rob Klinkhammer was in front of the net to deflect in the shot and tie the game 2-2. But late in the period the caps struck once again to take the lead 3-2.

The Oilers Young Guns got a powerplay early in the second period. At :36 Mark Letestu won a draw on the face off in the Caps zone. Andrej Sekera then had the puck and moved to the center near the blue line and passed it back to McDavid on the right side. McDavid moved in looking for a backdoor pass and shot it toward the front. Pouliot provided a screen at the front of the net when the puck deflected in off a Caps defender to give McDavid his 5th goal of the season and a 3-3 tie.

But the wheels fell of the Oilers as one bad play led to another allowing the Capital three goals in a row to make it 6-3. Washington made swiss cheese out of Oilers goalie Nilsson as he allowed six goals in seventeen shots and was replaced by Talbot. At 14:42 the Oilers tried to push back when Anton Slepyshev moved the puck up to Nugent-Hopkins who drove up the right hand side. He attempted to pass the puck to Hall breaking in on the left hand side. The puck bounced back to Nugent-Hopkins who quickly picked up the puck and snapped a shot high over the goal tenders shoulder to make it 6-4.

But all was for naught as the Caps added another goal in the third period to end the game 7-4 in a wild shootout.
