The Edmonton Oilers Young Guns destroyed the Calgary Flames 5-2 to win their first game of the 2015-16 season and are now 1-4. Each of the Oilers number 1 overall draft picks scored with Nuggent-Hopkins, Hall and Yakupov each scoring a goal and McDavid scoring two goals. McDavid also notched his first NHL assist.

The Battle of Alberta started in earnest but it was the Young Guns that struck first. At 12:59 of the first period Hendricks gained the zone on the right hand side and dropped the puck off to Taylor Hall. Hall moved to the middle and passed the puck over to Eric Gryba who fired the puck from the left point. The Calgary goalie stopped the shot as it rebounded to the right side. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins floating in on the right was there to bang in the rebound to the middle of the net and make the score 1-0.

In the first part of the second period Calgary struck to tie the score 1-1. Then at 16:31Nail Yakupov picked up the puck in his own zone and quickly passed it up to Conner McDavid clearing the zone on the right hand side. McDavid sped through the Neutral zone into Calgary territory. He drove in on the right hand side and snapped a shot under the arm of the Calgary goaltender to put up the Young Oil 2-1.

Early in the third period at :25 the Oilers took a face off in the Calgary zone on the right hand side. Matt Hendricks took the face off and drew it back. Oscar Klefbom picked up the puck and brought it to the right hand corner, he passed it to the front of the net where Taylor Hall deflected it to the goalie and quickly shot the rebound through the five hole of the Calgary goal tender to make it 3-1.

At 2:59 of the third period Benoit Pouliot fought for the puck at the back of the Calgary net and centered it to Conner McDavid on the left hand side. McDavid spotted Yakupov in front of the net on the right hand side and quickly passed it over. Yakupov then shot the puck home to make it 4-1. The Flames cut the lead 4-2 a few minutes later.

At 16:20 on a power play Nugent-Hopkins battled for the puck on the right corner, he kicked the puck over to Andrej Sekera along the boards. Sekera then passed it down to Hall. Hall moved to the net on the right hand side and spotted McDavid back door in front of the net. Hall saucered a pass over to McDavid who snapped the puck in to complete the scoring 5-2.
